Unit 6.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Description of Site:

Moodle is an online learning platform that can be accessed by Administration, Teachers, Secretaries, Students, and Parents. On my district's homepage, there is a direct link to Moodle. Once you click the link, you do have access as a guest to certain pages, but everyone is also given a username and password to be able to access the entire site (access is all different depending on what your position is - teacher, student, etc.) Basically, the Administration can post information for Teachers, Students, and Parents to view; Teachers can post information for other Teachers to view; and Teachers can also post information for their Students and Parents to view. As far as I know, Moodle is free for our district and does not have any ads. It is definitely a safe and appropriate site to be used in schools, especially because everyone is given a specific login through our technology department - this way, outsiders are given very limited access. Although young kids in elementary school cannot really use the program, their parents can; therefore, it can be appropriate for all grade levels. Having everything in one place definitely makes things a lot easier!

Educational Uses of Site

  • Administrators can communicate with Teachers - Handbooks, student PSSA and Keystone data, and formal observation information are all accessible through this site at any time.
  • Teachers can communicate with Administration and Office Staff - All of our discipline forms, maintenance forms, etc. are sent and received through this site.
  • Teachers can communicate with Colleagues - New ideas can be posted to share with other teachers.
  • Teachers can communicate with Students and Parents - Information can be posted about each course you teach to be viewed by students and/or parents.

Review of Site

At first, this site was a little difficult to get used to. In my opinion, many of the other online learning platforms we have learned about (in this course, specifically) were very user friendly - I was able to watch a short tutorial video or play around with the site for a bit, and it made sense on how it worked. Moodle took a little longer for me to learn, but after a three-hour presentation at one of our in-service days, I got the hang of it! It is great to have everything all in one place, and it definitely cuts back on paper usage. It is so nice to not have to sort through emails to find the principal handbook that was sent out at the beginning of the year - instead it is all right there in Moodle - very organized and easy to find. Overall, I really like Moodle, especially because my whole disrict is taking advantage of it's many great features. It is a great way for everyone in the education process to be able to communicate and collaborate.
